Veterinary Student Placements & EMS Opportunities

PLEASE NOTE THAT APPLICATIONS FOR SPRING 2027 EMS PROGRAM IS NOW CLOSED.

At Bishopton Vets we are committed to supporting the next generation of veterinary students by supporting and offering Extra Mural Studies (EMS) placements. Placements are available within the small animal, farm animal and pig teams.

Why Choose EMS at Bishopton?

We believe EMS should be more than just a tick-box exercise. For us, it’s about mutual learning, hands-on experience, and building relationships that could lead to a future career with us.

Our aim is to give students a realistic and valuable insight into life as a vet. We tailor placements to the level of study and aim to provide opportunities to develop practical skills, deepen clinical understanding, and gain confidence.

  • We value students - a great student brings energy, fresh knowledge and can be a real asset to our team.
  • We want to learn from you too - we’re always keen to hear about the latest developments and techniques from vet schools.
  • We offer busy, varied caseloads across both large and small animals, providing real insight into life in a thriving practice.
  • We treat EMS as an extended job interview - many of our team started their careers with us as students on placement.
Build Your Future With Us

Many students return to us multiple times during vet school - as your confidence grows, so do the opportunities we can offer you. Our EMS programme is more like an externship, giving you increasing hands-on involvement and a deeper understanding of what it’s like to be part of the Bishopton team.

Applying for EMS at Bishopton

Due to high demand for placements, we’re only able to offer EMS to students who are:

  • Motivated and enthusiastic
  • Have a real interest in joining our team in the future

If this sounds like you, please send your CV and covering letter to: careers@bishoptonvets.co.uk

We're also a student nurse training centre

We’re an accredited veterinary nurse training practice at our Ripon, Thirsk and Northallerton surgeries, and our student nurses work across these three sites, giving them a range of experiences and learning environments.

Each of our student nurses is given an individual clinical coach, all of whom are registered veterinary nurses, meaning that they’ve been through the course themselves and understand what is required.

We guarantee all our students a job for at least the first year after finishing the course.

If you have any questions about the role a good place to start is the RCVS website RCVS-becoming-an-RVN

We require our student nurses to have completed work experience in a veterinary practice and recommend getting as much varied experience alongside this as possible, be that in riding stables, kennels, groomers, farms or pet shops. Any student nurse roles will be advertised within our vacancies.

We can offer many opportunities for qualified nurses to expand their skills. Our nurses have previously diversified to hold certificates in areas including inpatient medicine, surgery, emergency and critical care, exotic species, behaviour, nutrition and physiotherapy.

Work experience at Bishopton Vets

We’re always happy to facilitate work experience placements for students from the age of 15 (year 10 and above).

We only have limited spaces available at any one time and placements are in high demand, so please plan and get in touch with us with plenty of time before you would like to see practice.

Send us an email at workexperience@bishoptonvets.co.uk if you’re keen to get involved (only over 15-year-olds for safety reasons).
