Sustainability

How we’re putting sustainability at the heart of everything we do

We recognise that the health of animals, humans and the environment are inextricably linked, and that environmental degradation affects the health and wellbeing of employees, animal health and welfare, and public health.

That’s why we’ve placed sustainability at the heart of our practice.

We believe in the concept of One Health - "an integrated, unifying approach to balance and optimise the health of people, animals and the environment", as defined by the World Health Organisation.

We’re trying to make a difference across our practice to minimise our impact on the environment and to give back to our community, and have sustainability built into our CARES values, the guiding principles of our practice.

We’re proud to have gained Investors in the Environment accreditation, and have seen significant benefits since joining, including:

  • Tools to track our carbon footprint and measure our resource use across the practice.
  • Procurement, waste management and travel policies.
  • Targets and time frames for actions bringing benefits in both environmental and financial savings to the business.
  • We’ve set up our Green Group to engage the whole practice, including team building days creating bug hotels and a wildflower meadow
  • Jennyruth Workshops community links and employer supported volunteering days for team members to be involved with local charities.
  • Reduction in paper use by using Docusign.
  • Cycle to work and electric vehicle purchase schemes for team members.
  • Transitioning all of our company vehicles to electric.
  • Waste recycling and improved segregation of clinical waste to decrease what needs to go for highest temperature incineration.

How our team is leading change

Each of our species teams has embraced our sustainability vision, transitioning to responsible parasiticide use, electric vehicles and paper free communications where possible.

For example, we’ve recently established a service for safe disposal of unused medicines for our small animal clients, and have set up reminders to raise awareness and help our clients to cooperate.

In 2025 we began offering bespoke, risk-based parasite control plans for all of our Lifetime Care Club members as standard, using our new VetDx Petpoint digital platform to determine the most appropriate parasite prevention plan for you and your pet, which balances pet heath, human health and care for the environment.

As well as this, our farm and pig teams have been supporting local farmers with preventative herd health planning for many years, to help achieve improved efficiency within their business and to reduce the use of medicines.

All of this is underlined by the fantastic international effort our sister company, RAFT Solutions, is making to lead international conversation on sustainability, including presenting research to the COP25 climate change conference for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and consulting on how to work towards net zero for farmers and industry including retailers such as Morrisons.
