Cattle Foot Trimmer/Veterinary Technician

We are looking for a practical, motivated person to join our farm veterinary team as a Cattle Foot Trimmer. Previous experience of handling cattle is essential, but previous foot-trimming experience is not - we can provide training for the right person.
About Bishopton Vets

Bishopton have been supporting Yorkshire's farmers since 1943. Fast forward 80+ years and we're now one of the region's largest independent practices - but our heart hasn't changed. We remain rooted in community, guided by our values and proud to be independently owned and run.

About The Role - Cattle Foot Trimmer/Veterinary Technician
Closing Date: Fri 30th October 2026
Location(s): Ripon

This is a skilled and rewarding role supporting dairy farms to prevent and manage lameness. You will work with farmers to carry out routine preventative trimming, as well as treating lame cows to relieve pain, improve mobility and protect their welfare. Over time, you will develop the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to assess feet, identify lesions and carry out high-quality corrective trimming.
The work is physically demanding and takes place on commercial farms in all weather conditions. You will need to be confident working around cattle and comfortable with the practical realities of the job - including moving cows through handling systems and into a trimming crush.

About you

You will:
• Have good practical experience of handling cattle
• Be physically capable and happy working outdoors throughout the year
• Have a calm, confident and welfare-focused approach to livestock
• Be interested in developing a highly skilled and specialist role
• Be organised and able to plan and manage your own working schedule
• Communicate well with farmers, our office team and herd vets
• Enjoy being part of a supportive team
• Have an interest in British dairy farming and the local rural community
• Hold a full UK driving licence
Experience of foot trimming would be welcomed, but attitude, livestock experience and willingness to learn are more important.

A role that can work around you
We can offer flexibility in how the position is structured.
A three-day part-time role may suit someone who wishes to combine foot trimming with farming or other interests. If you are looking for full-time work, the role could be predominantly focused on foot trimming, or it could include a wider range of veterinary technician duties to provide additional variety. Full training would be provided for these duties.

The position may particularly suit an experienced herdsman or farm worker who wants to continue working closely with cattle and the dairy industry while moving towards more sociable hours and fewer weekend commitments.
Some flexibility will be needed to meet the needs of our farms, but occasional early starts or late finishes are balanced with shorter days elsewhere.

This role provides:
• Training and development in professional cattle foot trimming
• The opportunity to build a technically skilled and valuable career
• Full-time or part-time working options
• Predominantly weekday and sociable working hours
• The choice to specialise in foot trimming or combine it with other veterinary technician work
• Varied work across progressive dairy farms
• Close support from our herd vets, veterinary technicians and office team
• A friendly and established team with strong links to the local farming community

If you are experienced with cattle, enjoy practical work and would like to use your skills in a role that makes a tangible difference to cow welfare and dairy farm performance, we would love to hear from you.

What we can offer you?
Holiday
31 days holiday (includes 8 Bank Holidays) per annum pro rata.
