Vettings

The purchase of a horse involves an element of the unkown

No horse is risk free and via pre-purchase examinations we aim to identify, assess and attempt to quantify that element of the unknown for you, so that you can come to an informed decision as to whether to proceed with the purchase. The vet will list any clinical abnormalities found during the procedure and then conclude whether or not the horse is suitable for the proposed use.

Pre-purchase and Insurance Vettings

At Bishopton Equine we perform two types of vetting, a 2 stage or full 5 stage vetting process.

2 Stage Vetting Process - This process simply involves a thorough clinical examination and gait/soundness assessment at walk and trot.

5 Stage Vetting Process - This process includes the full clinical examination, gait assessment at walk and trot but also observation of the animal at exercise, a rest phase and an extra soundness examination. Sometimes it may be necessary to use other diagnostic tools. X-rays, endoscopy, ultrasound and other tests can be incorporated into the examination but these are not part of the standard examination.

HKJC Vettings

HKJC Pre-Import Examinations

Stewart Mechie, one of our senior vets, has recently returned to the UK from Hong Kong after working for the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) for the last three years.

Stewart’s work in HK involved examination of horses for suitability to race, as well as a review of all pre-import veterinary examination reports and diagnostic images. This was to ensure that horses imported to Hong Kong met the stringent requirements of the HKJC and were suitable to compete under Hong Kong conditions.

Now Stewart is back in the UK, as a practice we are delighted to offer HKJC vettings for thoroughbred racehorses across the UK. We provide a comprehensive evaluation and expert opinion to ensure the horse’s meet the stringent requirements for suitability to race and importantly, compete in Hong Kong.
