Complex Operations & Hospital Care

For more complex operations or hospital care it can be harder for us to accurately price procedures in advance. If your pet requires any investigations or treatment that is not included in the price list, the vet will always discuss the options available to you and provide you with an estimate of costs.

Payment options

Payment is due at the time of treatment or before collecting your pet. Payment can be made by cash, Apple Pay, credit or debit cards, BACS or via PetsApp. Our practice team are happy to discuss any individual circumstances regarding payment options.

Pet Insurance

At Bishopton Vets we recommend that you consider an insurance policy for your pet to help cover the cost of veterinary care should they become injured or unwell. Please find further information about pet insurance and the claims process here.

Prescription Information

You may obtain Prescription Only Medicines - Veterinary (POM-Vs) directly from us or you can ask for a written prescription to obtain these medicines from another veterinary surgeon or a pharmacy.

Please note that a prescription may not always be appropriate, for example if your pet is an in-patient or if immediate treatment is necessary. We can provide the price of any medicine that may be dispensed for your pet.

Written prescriptions must be completed by a vet and can only be issued to animals under their care.

To ensure we continue to provide the best possible care for your pet, and to comply with updated RCVS guidelines for responsible medicine use, our general policy is to re-examine pets requiring repeat prescriptions every 6-months. However, this may vary based on individual circumstances; some pets may be seen more or less frequently depending on their condition or medication and the opinion of the veterinary surgeon.

Our re-examination fee is £55. If you are a member of our Lifetime Care Club a discount will apply.

In all cases, clinical conditions and response to medication can change over time, and potentially side effects can be seen, which may require a review of dose or treatment choice. It is therfore our general policy to provide a prescription for 3-months of medication, after which we will request a verbal update on the health of your pet so that the prescribing vet can ensure that your pet's individual needs are still being met and make any necessary adjustments to their medical plan.

Our standard charge for a 3-month written prescription is £25. This covers the professional time of the vet in reviewing the health records, assessing your pet's current response to medication, authorising appropriate ongoing medication and updating and maintaining the necessary pharmacy records, in addition to the administrative costs associated with issuing the prescription and liasing the pharmacy of your choice.

Please also note that there are certain medicines that, under current medicines legislation, we may only prescribe for a maximum of 1-month of medication. Our 1-month prescription fee for such medications is discounted to £20.
