Blood Donors Needed

Tue 1st November 2022
We are on the look out for new canine blood donors...

Many of our wonderful donors are due to go into retirement after helping to save so many lives over the past few years. If you are interested in your dog becoming a donor, we would invite all new potential blood donors in for a chat and full health check with the vet, general health blood test and blood typing prior to donation in the future.

All donors must be:

  • Fit and healthy, not taking any medication and vaccinated yearly
  • 1-8 years of age
  • Over 25kg in weight
  • Be happy and confident at the vets
  • Not travelled outside of the UK

What type of dog makes a good donor?

We are looking for dogs who are confident, happy to be handled and who enjoy having lots of fuss and attention. They should be comfortable visiting the vets, meeting new people and adaptable to new experiences. We want your dog to enjoy the blood donation process and think of it as a fun day out!

What happens at blood donation?

Our fully trained team will ensure your dog is comfortable and monitor their welfare throughout the appointment. The blood donation is taken from a vein in the neck after a local anaesthetic cream is applied, and the whole process takes around 5-10 minutes. The dogs are always rewarded with lots of treats and cuddles!  Your dog's blood would then go straight to helping a sick dog in our hospital.

If you have any questions or would like your dog to be a life saver, please contact our Ripon hospital either by phone or email admin@bishoptonvets.co.uk and one of our blood donor team will come back to you.
