Taking your Pet Abroad

Tue 8th June 2021
If you are planning to travel abroad with your pet please allow extra time to get pet passports issued as the process could take longer due to changes as a result of Brexit.

Holiday plans might be a bit up in the air this year... if you are planning to travel abroad with your dog or cat please be mindful of changes as a result of Brexit.

You can no longer use a pet passport issued in Great Britain for travel to an EU country or Northern Ireland. Except if your pet passport was issued in an EU country or Northern Ireland.

When travelling to an EU country or Northern Ireland, your dog or cat needs the following:

  • Microchip
  • Rabies vaccination
  • 'Animal health certificate’ which must be issued by your vet up to 10 days before travel. It will be valid for 4 months for re-entry into Great Britain. Your pet will need a new certificate for each trip to an EU country or Northern Ireland from Great Britain.

Please ensure you check the rules of the country you are travelling to for any additional restrictions or requirements before you travel.  Non EU countries have different requirements. But all of the requirements and testing will take longer so please allow more time.
